How to Save Money At Joann Fabrics

Do you have some fabricholic tendencies? Do you seem to regularly spend more at your Joann Fabrics store than you ever intended? No fear. These five, easy tips will have you saving money while still accomplishing your sewing and quilting goals.

1. Get on the Mailing List

This is the number one, surefire way to save money. If you are on the mailing list then you know what sales are coming in the future. You can plan your projects to save the most money the same way that you plan your trip to the grocery store.

Plus, folks on the mailing list also get coupons! You can use the coupons to buy the items that rarely go on sale like crafting books.

2. Take Your Flyer to the Store

Do not depend on your memory. Take your flyer to the store with you. Circle what you want to purchase. This is especially helpful in a high pressure situation like Black Friday. It’s a win-win for everyone! You remember what you need to purchase. The employees can direct you to exactly where your deal is in the store.

You’ll also want to have your flyer available to be scanned at check out. This insures that you will keep on the list.

3. Have a Plan

Have you heard of the advice to plan your work and work your plan? Well, you can extend that advice to your quilting. Take your calendar and look at what events you have over the next six months. Look for birthdays, anniversaries and graduations.

Now, look at your stash. See what events are coming up in the future, what is in your stash and what you need to finish the projects. Now you have a legitimate excuse to go to the store. You do need that exact shade of color blue to finish your Mother’s Day quilt. It is part of your plan.

4. Stock up on Sales

You may think that this is obvious. But is it? A sale is not just a sale on fabric or a $0.99 pattern sale. A sale is knowing what is a good price and what is not.

For example, Joann Fabrics usually has a sweet Black Friday sale. Over the past couple of years they have sold their flannel for $0.99/yard on that day. Folks usually go for the printed flannel. Me? I head for the solids because I know that some time during the next year I will need a coordinating solid color with a print.

Think. What are your basic colors that you always use? Taking a good look at your stash will tell you the truth. Stock up on coordinating colors on the sale.

Also, don’t miss out on the notions sale. Everyone needs needle and thread. When notions are 50% off, go shopping for projects for the rest of the year!

5. Check out the Clearance and Remnants Sections

Don’t forget the odds and ends. You can use these scraps for appliqué. There are also some patterns that use less than a yard of fabric. I’m thinking of Lazy Girl Designs that actually has a design line called “Fat Quarter Cuties.” You don’t need a lot of fabric to finish a project.

The next time you pass by your local Joann Fabrics, hold your head high. With some planning and information, you can cut your fabric buying costs while still buying everything you need.
