How to Choose a Quilt Guild
You have come to the point where you are ready to share your quilts with the outside world. Perhaps your friends and family are tired of hearing you talk about quilting and you want to meet others who share your love of quilting.
The best thing to do in the situation, of course, is take advantage of your local quilt guilds. Quilt guilds are great places to meet quilters, gain inspiration and for force you to complete more quilts.
But how do you find the quilt guild that is right for you? Here are some tips:
1. Find quilt guilds in your area
It should be pretty easy to find a guild in your area. Your local quilt shop may have flyers. If they don’t, ask one of the employees. They are either a member of one of the local quilt guilds or they know where they are. The quilt shop may even be the meeting place for a guild.
2. Take a quilting class
Signing up for a class is also a good way to find out about the quilting community in your area. At the very least, you’ll be able to gather information about your teacher. After completing the class, your teacher will probably be able to direct you to the right guild for you. If you are a beginner, you can also find out if you want to pursue the hobby.
3. Know What You Want
Knowing what you want will go along way toward making a good quilt guild experience. Are you looking to join a quilt guild for social reasons? Are you more interested in donating quilts to charities? Do want to improve your skills so monthly programs are important to you? If you have choices of off-line quilt guilds, have in mind what you want can save you time.
Certain quilt guilds are specialists for certain types of quilts. If you love traditional quilting, you may not want to join the guild that seems to be more into artistic quilts.
No need to join a quilt guild for social reasons if you live too far from other members to get to know them well.
6. Go more than once
Go to more than one meeting to get a good feel for the group.
7. Check out the Internet
Yahoo groups is a great place to look for an on-line group. They can be as talkative as off-line groups. You do not have to quilt on your own. Check into quilt guilds either on-line or in person and watch your quilting skills grow.
